Sea Swim Yorkshire

In 2021, Whitby Surf School will be working with local swimming coach Ally Brisby to provide high-quality sea swimming introductions and coaching.

Our coastline is a beautiful part of the world to introduce yourself to the world of open water swimming. Spectacular sunrises, sunsets, bright blue-sky days, and incredible views that you could only get by being out in the sea – experience Whitby beach in a way you never have before.

Ally Brisby has been a swimmer all her life, and it only took her one wild swim to be totally hooked on the sport. She’s passionate about open water swimming and on September 12th, 2013 she completed the channel swim after 2 years of training. She is now a mentor for channel swimmers and has co-founded Whitby Wild Swimmers. Highly experienced, she offers expert coaching to help you fully immerse yourself in wild swimming on the North Yorkshire coast.

Why Swim On The Yorkshire Coast?

There are lots of physical and mental benefits of open water swimming; going out in the sea gives you a real sense of adventure and the cold water can contribute to stress management and weight loss. Acclimatising and adapting to cold water can even reduce the risk of heart disease, and just immersing yourself in cold water will help you deal with anxiety or worries, washing them away into an oasis of calm.

We believe the North East Coast is the best place to experience this because whilst you’re swimming, you’ll be surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery and feel an indescribable one-ness with nature. It’s a unique experience, more challenging and rewarding than swimming in a pool, and you get to do it all off the beautiful sandy beaches of Whitby and Sandsend.

On Whitby Beach, there is also a fantastic and friendly sea swimming community, so once you’ve mastered the basics you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in wild swimming and will have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friendships. It’s great fun, an adventure every time you dive in, and the wild swimming family is as welcoming as it is hardy.

All Sea Swimming sessions and courses will be running throughout the season.

Our Instructors are fully qualified, and Ally is highly experienced in the sea so you can enjoy and learn in a relaxed and completely safe environment.

An Introduction To Sea Swimming

Our half day introduction to Sea Swimming session is perfect for both beginners and intermediate sea swimmers alike.

In groups of up to eight, you will be taught all about the theory of sea swimming before taking to the water for a practical session. This will include guidance on entry points, rip currents and personal safety in the sea, useful equipment and understanding how the shape of the beach effects the conditions. All this, alongside tips and tricks to help you acclimatise to the water and find a safe place to swim when heading out on your own.

All equipment is included in the price, so you just need to turn up with a towel and a swimming costume (we would also recommend a bottle of water and a hot drink and warm clothes for after your session).

If you’ve not yet had the opportunity to dip your toe into the sea-swimming community, this is the perfect session to help you build confidence in the water and learn a little more about the sport. By the time you leave, you’ll be totally hooked and ready to come back for more.

£65 per session - All equipment included (Excluding goggles)
