Overlooking Whitby beach from the promenade, Whitby Surf School provides high-quality and memorable surf and beach activities for anyone wishing to experience the coast in a new and invigorating way.
At Whitby Surf School, we run a vast array of surf and sea activities to help you experience Whitby beach in ways you never have before. From surf lessons to weeklong clubs, from sunrise SUP paddles to bodyboarding, we offer all you could want to make the most of your day at Whitby Beach.
As a business, and as beach lovers who spend a lot of time on the seafront with our families, it is vital for us that the beach is kept clean. We have a close relationship with Whitby Beach Sweep, who run beach sweeps throughout the year to collect stray plastic and litter. Over the years of working on the beaches, we have seen first-hand the damage that waste and single-use plastic can do to what we believe is one of the most beautiful areas in the country.
Alongside our surf activities, we are guardians of the Whitby beach #2minutebeachclean board and are always enthusiastic about anyone willing to give two minutes of their day to help a little.
You can find lots of eco-freindly alternatives to beach essentials in our Shop, as well as essential Surf gear and accessories!
Holly and Josh took over Whitby Surf School in 2018, after Josh left his decade-long career as a RNLI lifeguard. With a deep love of Whitby, of working on the beach every day and a dedication to bringing up their young sons in the best possible environment they could imagine, it was a natural progression. Now key members of the beach community down on Whitby Promenade, the business has gone from strength to strength.
At Whitby Surf School we are team of passionate surfers and beach fanatics with a drive to share our love and experience of the coastline. We strive to make certain all our activities are safe, exciting, and above all else, fun.
Our customers are at the heart of our business and are our number one priority - so every session and activity we provide is safety checked, inclusive and uniquely memorable. Safety is key at Whitby Surf School, multiple members of the team have backgrounds that are heavily involved in the RNLI. Josh worked as a RNLI lifeguard for 10 years on beaches across the North East Coast, and Josh, Leah and Ally all volunteer together as integral members of the Whitby RNLI Lifeboat team. With all this experience on hand, and fully qualified expert instructors, you can be sure that your safety is our number 1 priority.
As a team, we believe surfing or paddle boarding in Whitby is one of the best ways to experience our beautiful coastline. Whitby beach is different on every day of the year, and ever changing. We believe that moment is worth sharing.
We also work closely with The Wave Project, a charity dedicated to providing surf lessons for young people with mental health problems. This is one of our biggest achievements. 3890 young people have accessed surf lessons through The Wave Project surf therapy, and it has been a humbling experience to be a part of that – and to see the progression of those involved throughout their time with us. It has been an honour to be a part of their unforgettable experience and we hope to go on to work with the charity more in the future!
Josh took over Whitby Surf School in 2018, after spending 10 years lifeguarding along the North East coast. Josh is one of the most experienced, safe, and fun surf and paddle boarding instructors you could ask for. His favourite thing about Whitby beach is its ever-changing nature, and the jaw-dropping summer sunsets.
Although you won’t see Holly much at the Surf School, she is always busy behind the scenes. Holly’s favourite beach along the coastline is Sandsend, she believes it is one of the most outstanding beaches on the UK coast, and we might just have to agree!
Leah keeps the surf school running and is the women in charge when we’re not around. She serves on the Whitby RNLI Lifeboat with Josh and is a highly-experienced paddleboarder who loves nothing more than being on the sea. Washing the kit, working hard as a sales assistant and keeping Josh organised is a tough job, but Leah somehow seems to manage it all and we would be lost without her.
